Planning a trip to Japan often involves understanding the various transportation options available, including the popular SUICA card.

However, recent changes have made it necessary to update our knowledge regarding SUICA cards and the introduction of the digital SUICA app. Additionally, there is the Welcome SUICA card, designed specifically for tourists. In this blog post, we will explore the differences between these options and discuss the transition from physical SUICA cards to the SUICA app, and our takeaway from using both the Welcome SUICA cards and the SUICA app on our recent Japan trip.

Introducing the SUICA App:

In response to advancements in technology and a growing reliance on smartphones, the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) has shifted from physical SUICA cards to the SUICA app. Not sure if the physical SUICA cards will make a return but for now, it is only available on the app. Key Features of the SUICA App:

1. Digital Convenience:

With the SUICA app, there's no need to carry a physical card or worry about losing it. The app allows you to simply tap your mobile device on the designated reader to pay for transportation fares, providing a streamlined and contactless experience.

2. Seamless Integration:

Once you arrive in Japan, the SUICA app becomes accessible for download on your phone device. By linking your mobile wallet with the app, you can easily manage your SUICA funds, recharge your balance, and track your transaction history - all in one place.

3. No more physical SUICA cards:

Before your trip, it will be handy to download the app on your phone (you will notice it will say 'unavailable' as this will switch over to 'available' when you are in Japan) making it easier to travel around Japan as the SUICA is stored on your phone. Please note the physical SUICA card is no longer available to be purchased in Japan.

Understanding the Welcome SUICA Card:

While the physical SUICA cards are no longer available for purchase, the Welcome SUICA

card still offers a valuable option for tourists upon arrival at the airport.

Please note that you can only purchase the Welcome SUICA card at the airport.

Here are some key features of the Welcome SUICA Card:

1. Physical Card Convenience:

The Welcome SUICA Card offers instant accessibility, as it can be purchased directly at the airport. It serves as a preloaded physical card, allowing you to use it for transportation right away without the need to download the app beforehand.

2. Passport Requirement:

To purchase a Welcome SUICA Card, you'll need to present your passport. This requirement ensures that the card is exclusively available to tourists visiting Japan.

3. Additional Perks:

Similar to its counterpart, the Welcome SUICA Card provides additional benefits, such as discounted travel packages and access to exclusive promotions and attractions. These perks enable tourists to make the most of their visit while enjoying special offers tailored to their needs.

Choosing the Right Option for Your Trip:

When deciding between the SUICA app and the Welcome SUICA Card, several factors come into play. If you own an Apple iPhone and prefer a digital solution with the added convenience of managing your transportation funds through your smartphone, the SUICA app is the ideal choice. On the other hand, if you prefer a physical card and want instant access to transportation upon arrival, the Welcome SUICA Card remains a reliable option.

Our experience with the SUICA app & Welcome SUICA card:

We both had the Welcome SUICA cards & my husband had the SUICA app on his phone. Both options are great but In our personal opinion, we found the Welcome SUICA card to be the better option. We didn't have to worry about his phone going flat and having the physical card also meant I could easily give the card to one of my nieces to purchase a drink at 7/11, without me having to go in the store with her. In saying that either one is amazing as our favorite feature of the SUICA is being able to use it at most stores!

In conclusion:

As the world moves towards digital solutions, the shift from physical SUICA cards to the SUICA app offers travelers increased convenience and flexibility. However, the availability of the SUICA being only available on the app can be a downfall for those who are not tech savvy (only 40% of people where we live use online banking so yes, there are still many people who only use the phone to make calls & take photos), making the Welcome SUICA Card an alternative option for those who prefer a physical card upon arrival. Whichever choice you make, both options ensure a seamless and efficient way to pay for transportation and offer additional benefits to enhance your travel experience in Japan.
